I don't think GTK as such is as hard as XEmacs internals. In order to
support multiple device types we need to glue the devices to XEmacs
in ways that often seem unnatural to "natives" of those devices.

I think Bill P said that, too; I don't recall whether he thought
supporting both was do-able or whether he was recommending abandoning
GTK 1 support in favor of GTK 2.

Currently GNOME piggybacks on GTK. I don't think continuing GNOME
support is a problem. KDE is a whole different issue, since it
depends on a Qt. There is a Qt port, do "cvs status -v version.sh"
and search the output to find the Qt tag if you want to check it out.
However, AFAIK that's just proof of concept, although we did have a
thread in which we got rms to sanction it (Qt is not free on Windows,
or at least is wasn't at that time).

If you want to do some coding, write directly to Bill Perry
<wmperry(a)xemacs.org>. He is very busy, but he's the only expert and
would probably respond to someone who's looking for a little advice.
And who knows---with luck, he might decide it's time to jump back in.
