I find that the openssl wrapper that is used to do the SSL connection
often doesn't know that the connection has been dropped.
I find that openssh also has a number of problems with figuring out
whether a connection is still live or not, on Macs. I wouldn't be
surprised to find that that's an issue with OpenSSL on that platform.
Don't both of you use Macs?
