I've also encountered -y, but I don't remember which platform.
Damn, the tar documentation really needs fixing. Anyway, selected
entries from the GNU tar NEWS file (included in tar-1.13.25):
version 1.13.18 - Paul Eggert, 2000-10-29
* The short name of the --bzip option has been changed to -j,
and -I is now an alias for -T, for compatibility with Solaris tar.
version 1.13.11 - Paul Eggert, 1999-08-23
* The short name of the --bzip option has been changed to -I,
for compatibility with paxutils.
version 1.13.6 - Paul Eggert, 1999-08-11
* New option -y or --bzip2 for bzip2 compression, by popular request.
version 1.13 - Paul Eggert, 1999-07-08
* An interim GNU tar alpha had new --bzip2 and --ending-file options,
but they have been removed to maintain compatibility with paxutils.
Please try --use=bzip2 instead of --bzip2.
