Did we come up with a final set of steps for package maintainers?
No.
I'm still confused.
Aren't we all! Why should you be special? :-)
In particular, does the package maintainer do the commit/push in the
top-level repo? (I saw emails suggesting yes and no.)
Mike S's proposal is that
(1) package maintainers (ie, those allowed to commit to the package)
commit and push in the package, but not in the top level.
(2) Norbert pulls in the package, then commits and pushes in the
top-level, followed by doing what he's always done.
Seems reasonable to me.
And I assume that Norbert is still the person who updates the
package
version number, right?
Yes. Maintainers should update AUTHOR_VERSION, as usual.
Personally, I'd like to stay away from named branches
You won't get any argument from me on that. However, people who are
used to them might be able to use them to communicate branches via the
package repos. It's their package they screw up if they get it wrong.
