errors when trying to start Xft enabled xemacs

If I then manually evaluate init.el, and custom.el, everything is fine, and my fonts are all nicely antialiased. However it would be nice if I didn't have this manual start step each time. Any pointers as to configuration I could change to get rid of this is would be great.
