It's exactly the opposite. It used to autodetect things wrong in some
cases. ./configure; make; make install _must_ work correctly. People
who want platform-dependent features will be accomodated as much as

i don't recall these cases... it seemed to work ok for me.
configure geeks are welcome to make widgets happen.

This is the right solution.
it's not documented. --with-widgets isn't even mentioned in the
INSTALL file.
if you do "configure --help" it tell you that "lucid, motif, athena,
or no" are the metioned options.
And when people look in PROBLEMS, will that help them? no.
are widgets to be considered truly optional? The customize buffers
are pretty useless without them.
However, it seems not to always work on 21.5 post-merge.
