Not really. I've tried to figure out what Gnus is doing, but the code
is so recursive and poorly modularized for this purpose that I've
never got very far. The 'gnus-decoded coding system helps to confuse
things, as does latin-unity.
The test case I gave didn’t involve Gnus, just latin-unity, which is why I
asked you in particular.
I'm ten days from Summer Freedom, I'll put this on my list of
stuff to
think about.
