That is what I figured in the end --
% xemacs < `tty` > `tty`
created chaos, although I could attach to it.
For now, when my script finds there is no gnuserv instance to attach to,
it will just open a new xemacs. Since it does check for an accessible
gnuserv first, it indeed will attach to a xemacs instance running
gnuserv on tty (tmux here). So that is kind of a workaround, although it
is not the one-stop solution that X11 allows for.
