After a couple of reboots because I was left with hung processes that couldn't be killed (even by root with kill -9) and a fsck to fix filesystem corruption I finally gave up on building the whole tree. I resorted to `make distclean' `make autoloads' at toplevel. And then built just the couple of packages I wanted to update. I have no idea what is going on, and right now I really don't care.
