Well, it turns out this is actually pretty easy to reproduce. I'm not
sure why I didn't do this before, but the following two commands are
sufficient to make it happen:
E:\XEmacs>PATH XEmacs-21.5.29\i586-pc-win32\;%PATH%
E:\XEmacs>XEmacs-21.5.29\i586-pc-win32\xemacs.exe -vanilla -eval
"(eshell-command \"xemacs\")"
(Of course, this assumes that the Windows native build of XEmacs
21.5.29 is installed in E:\XEmacs, and that the eshell package is
installed. No, I don't have any idea why it seems to only happen with
eshell...)
