Bad juju. It's bad enough that XEmacs requires me to install a GIF
library -- it even begins to be picky about *which* library I install.
Let's be consistent, please.

It still contains GIF reading code, which is what we use. XEmacs
should use Autoconf to test which library you have, and use the
appropriate one.
Is it really worth the effort? Who actually uses giflib, apart from
the people here on xemacs-beta?
If giflib was in widespread use, or if there had been a released
version of XEmacs which used it, then there would be some value in
retaining support for it.
As things stand, giflib turned out to be a fairly short-lived
experiment, much like libMagick.
