There is absolutely no reason to behave like that in a public mailinglist. Especially if you think you have a good point, insulting other people along a good argument does no good to your argument. And no, merely having been like that for as long as people know you is no excuse for a wrong behaviour. Besides, if you want to make someone look stupid in public (besides yourself), try saying something smart instead, that usually does the trick.
