The attached patch
a) implements your suggestion;
b) enables ecb to work.
So, I guess if the decision is final to abandon preserving window
identity over calls to save-window-excursion, we should go with this.
Of course I don't mind whether you use this code or do your own
version, but note that the first diff is crucial, otherwise user
advice can screw everything.
