gui apps, use a much smaller progress gauge that fits in the status bar [the
echo area equivalent].

Is it time to make the minibuffer a real widget? If you used something
like a real statusbar from a GUI toolkit like MFC or GTK/Motif, you would
get this mostly for free.
It would be fairly easy for me in GTK land to just stick another XEmacs
'frame' down inside that statusbar widget. Getting one just the right
hight to not resize the minibuffer could be difficult.
