ehem ... GPL2? Just in case you didn't know, if you don't distribute
your version of XEmacs, you are not limited by the GPL at all. It
says so right on the label. If you think you might, you have to be a
little more careful, but jcbmacs can be GPL3 if you say so (XEmacs
21.4 is GPLv2 OR LATER as updated by the FSF etc etc) and aren't
dependent on a GPL2 library for *other* functionality. (Don't tell me
you have the kernel linked into XEmacs ... !? :-)
May I suggest that XEmacs should consider FSF-style input methods?

I'm not going to get to it myself for a long time. Since most of my
Japanese searching is done in Terminal.app (email on a remote host)
and XEmacs-21.5 isearch understands UTF-8 fine, this hasn't been an
issue for me for a long time ... I haven't looked at input methods in
a decade.
