Same thing here. I think the culprit is a change in package-get.el,
that tries to load a remote file using
insert-file-contents-literally. This patch makes updates work again
(at least on my machine...).
On mine too - thanks Dan. FWIW, although the patch from Adrian Aichner
did help to get rid of the error when trying to cwd to a file, getting
the packages index still did not work. With your patch, it works fine
again.
