First let me say I have been an XEmacs user for several
years
and could not get along without it. But I am getting
frustrated with
the latest releases. I'm running RedHat 7.1 and couldn't get
the distribution's XEmacs to work properly as I'm used to so
I went to the gamma version--same problem and I gave it up
and
tried the beta version.
It works good enough so I could get back to work, but there
are
still some irritating features. Let me describe the bulk
of my use and associated complaints (realize I'm not a
sophisticated
user and have rarely customized it [with the exception of
some
key definitions]):
1. C/C++ programming: editing, compiling, and debugging
source code.
a. I cannot get XEmacs to point to compile errors in the
source code.
I get the error message: "compilation-error-regexp-alist is
empty!"
but the error messages are clearly there in the compilation
buffer.
b. The function name point is in no longer appears on the
buffer
title bar.
2. ediff to compare directories and files:
a. File time stamps are missing. In their place are "*remote
file*".
b. The B buffer periodically goes into read-only status
without any
obvious user input.
3. General: The customization menus are daunting and
navigation is
extermely hazardous because the whole tree disappears if the
mouse
pointer slips off. Especially irritating is when I have to
travel
the whole way again just to change another attribute (can't
the menus
be sticky by default?).
I hope these complaints aren't taken personally because I
have the
greatest respect for the tremendous talent and effort that
has
gone into such a powerful product.
Thanks.
