One of the real killers is that Xft performance is significantly
lower
than core font performance, which really shows up some of the
inefficiencies in redisplay.
Another is that some of those inefficiencies make for ... drawing
issues, which are non-trivial to resolve. Aside from the gross issues,
there are some subtle clipping issues with character drawing that are
going to be very hard to resolve.
my .02, i'd willingly pay the performance issue, as long as the
current problems with xft<->redisplay [see attachment] artifacts are
resolved
