Not if you want to preserve backward compatibility. That's not my
decision though. I've offered a couple different suggestions. If
neither is acceptable, that's fine. I have a modified init.el file
that implements the desired change, so I'm happy.
The problem for me with changing ediff as you proposed here (apart
from the fact that I think it doesn't need to be changed - only vc
should be changed) is that it won't work with, say fsf's version
(since, as I understand, it will not be changed).
I am not really interested in these issues. They rarely rise to
concious perception. OTOH, I mistakenly start editing an old revision
of a file at least a couple times a month. Solving that problem is
much more important to me personally. I understand that the XEmacs
maintainers have other considerations.
