Yes. But isn't it also true that some packages that are picky about
flags do modify CFLAGS? So if some flag is vital you could set it
regardless of what the user has defined?
Yes, we have a mechanism for that through our flag-o-matic eclass, but
instead I have now added --with-optimization to the ebuild. In fact we
were already doing something like that but it didn't work due to changed
configure options. With USE=debug these optimizations can be turned off.
