Problem updating xemacs-packages from CVS

I checked out the xemacs-packages tree from CVS then changed into the xemacs-packages directory and did a cvs update, the update aborts as shown below. Same operations yielded expected results on xemacs-21.1 and xemacs-21.2 trees. ~/.cvsrc contains: diff -u checkout -P update -Pd per cvs.xemacs.org, but the same thing happened prior to putting this in place (I thought it might be my problem). What am I missing/doing wrong? Also; -zN options seem to be broken for me (csh on Sun Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.6, gzip 1.2.4 (18 Aug 93)). Is this a known problem?
