MD5 comparison fails in package-get

I'm having problems with the MD5 checksums in package-get; 21.1 (patch 4) "Arches" XEmacs Lucid with Mule. No package compares correctly (package-index.19990804). I assume I'm doing something stupid, since nobody else has mentioned this in a long while. I did notice that the calls to `md5' in package-get.el do not have explicit coding systems set. Shouldn't those calls be like (md5 (current-buffer) nil nil 'binary) instead of (md5 (current-buffer)) ?
