Taking some wild guesses:
This doesn't happen with RC2? The changes RC2->RC3 are in
configure.in (but you don't use configure), src/process-unix.c (not
linked), and event-msw.c (Paul Krause's patch + an assert). Do you
get gc-in-window-proc warnings on the console (at any point in startup
or from M-x gnus)? The gc-in-window-proc infloop in RC2 seems to be
Gnus-related, right? Does toggling --debug in the build make a
difference?
I don't see anything offhand in the trace that seems to be related to
changes in 21.4.4, but that would be the place to start.
