I don't think anything has changed with respect to X protocol
handling, although since Emacs windows are manipulated in Lisp there
could be a relationship to any of the recent changes to byte compiling
and so on.
I don't think I have the recent byte-compiling changes, but I don't know for
sure.
In the past, this seems to be related to particular window managers,
or maybe user usage patterns. Have you upgraded / changed anything
related to X? What is your window manager, operating system.
I have not changed anything X-related, but there is some kind of managed
updating system that could have. I'm running on Ubuntu 10.04 using whatever
the stock window manager is for Gnome.
I'm going to blame this particular system. I didn't have customize crashes
on either my mac or openSuSE system. There's no X errors or XtRemoveGrab
errors on those systems either. (But I'm not 100% sure right now that I'm
using exactly the same version of xemacs.)
Perhaps if it is a code change, I might find something when I'm doing the
search for the change that fixed the customize crash I was having.
