PNG should in theory actually help with this, since it includes support
for "full alpha blending in 8- and 16-bit modes, not just simple on-off
transparency like GIF" (though support for alpha channels in
palette-based modes looks pretty nasty to a fairly untutored person like
me).
Your example of the XEmacs logo on the splash screen would, I guess, end
up looking with "XEmacs" in blue fading into black, but without the
shadow and surrounding text. That might not be ideal, but it would look
better than the current situation.
