How do you modify PATH on Windows XEmacs 21.4.3

I'm trying to add an entry to the PATH environment variable in my Windows (native) XEmacs 21.4.3. I use (putenv "PATH" mypath) but according to the docs, this only affects subprocesses. How can I modify an environment variable that XEmacs itself is using (in the process from which it was started). Is there a function for this?
