David, I'm willing to accept that, but I don't really know where to start to look. Confusing the issue is that I already have a functioning 21.4.6 which I built (foolishly) without debug information. I'm trying to re-build with debug info and it's not working. I even downloaded the sources from CVS and tried from "scratch" (I had a 21.4.5 which I had patched to 21.4.6). I don't know if this helps, but I just editted faces.el so that face-equal no longer calls error, but just returns nil when the domain is invalid. Now iso8859-1.el fails, and it seems to be becuase the case-table it is passing to set-standard-case-table is too short!?? It appears that iso8859/1-case-table is not evaluating properly. Does anyone have an idea of what has gone wrong? Thanks for all help and tips. gary
