This is specifically encouraged for visual glitches (well, I suppose
PNG might be slightly preferred since it's lossless), and we do have a
size cap on the mailing list (images get through, core dumps and
/vmunix don't). So no need for apology.

I don't think so. It's intermittent, right? If so, I've observed
similar behavior with the minibuffer recently. My first candidate for
the culprit is the tweaking of redisplay that's been done to get
acceptable performance out of the widget code on X. But I have little
confidence in that, it could be something in the help code too.
