Hi Rodney,
Nonetheless, it's true in my experience that building MULE on my
Solaris systems at my old job didn't work unless I configured
'--without-xim' or whatever the incantation of the day was. (I gather
from Stephen's email that I could have specified '--with-xim=xlib',
but I don't think I ever tried that.)
According to the PROBLEMS file, the following patches may fix up Motif
on Solaris:
107081-40 107656-07
108940-33 108652-25
Those are for Solaris 2.7 and 2.8, respectively. I was a lowly user
on the Sparc Solaris systems I used to have access to and I had no
control over what patches were applied to the systems, so I took the
expedient approach of disabling xim.

Hi Vin:
Good point. Definitely make sure that you have all of your Motif patches.
However, there is still one bug that I could never find a patch for which I
assume is Motif or CDE related:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.xemacs.beta/16385
If I run the same Motif XEmacs under GNOME, then this bug never occurs!?!
