Hello Peter,
unfortunately I can reproduce your problem after extracting the two
files (I use gnus-version "Gnus v5.8.8") to a directory and running
! runs the command dired-do-shell-command
from a dired buffer.
Neither
zcat * | tar xvf -
nor
zcat * | tar tvf -
succeed.
However, the files are just fine!
I can extract them with no trouble either using
WinZip 7.0 SR-1
or even
c:\Hacking\xemacs\xemacs-21.2\lib-src\minitar.exe
You are on the Linux platform, right?
Are you using GNU tar?
