Gutter appearance

This is a question about the beta version of XEmacs. When I first run XEmacs (21.2.26) the gutter has a grey background and my text area has a wheat background. That is how I want it to look. If I split the frame, the gutter has a wheat background. This is not how I want it to look. If I start XEmacs unmapped, run the gnuserv-start, and open a frame with gnuclient the gutter starts out with a wheat background. My question is there a property or specifier that I can set?
