OK. So even if the right thing to do is to add the function at the
C-level we still need to think about 21.4. So we will need the
compatibility stuff in e-lisp too.
Still this doesn't answer whether we should solve incompatibilities
based on the experience gained when upgrading packages or if we should
to through the APIs in a more structured way.
