That was my point. Not pissing off the developers who currently
apparently don't use parallel makes is far more important than shaving
seconds off end user builds.
I suspect the parallel makes broke about the time 21.4 was released.
There was a lot of fiddling done to make sure that auto-autoloads
worked properly with packages, and that would account for the breakage
Ed observed.
As you know, the process for building Lisp has never been very sane,
from the point of view of make and getting dependencies right.
