In tty mode, and by default in X mode, the block cursor covers the
character after point. What could be more intuitive behavior than
having the key labelled Del delete that character?
Your question may be rhetorical, but my answer is ``leaving things
alone.''
I type a key, it inserts a character. Then I type delete, it deletes
the character. Pretty damned obvious if you ask me. Really, neither
one is any more obvious than the other, but one is the way things have
always been.
You're arguing for a change, i. e. alienating your current user base.
So far, the best argument that I've seen even hinted at is ``That's
how Bill does it.'' Personally, I think it's a pretty sorry argument.
This is not something Bill Gates got wrong.
Maybe, maybe not. I think it is something he got wrong. You're the
one arguing for a change. I'd hope that you'd come up with a better
argument for it, or else leave it be.
