Part of the point of the “monospace,” “sans-serif” and “serif” fontconfig
families are that they’re aliases that should pretty much always point to
something that exists, surely? So just use monospace-12 as the fallback, at
least for Roman-alphabet scripts.
Looking at the platforms I have available I have to conclude
it's
going to be platform-specific. :-(
I don’t think we should do too much jumping through hoops for this;
fontconfig’s defaults are much more usable than are those for server-side
fonts.
