Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of a Red Hat distro? I
strongly suggest you ask Red Hat about this. It's nothing I've ever
seen before, but they probably have.
Failing that, try installing their most recent source RPM, overwriting
the source tree with the more recent XEmacs tree, and building via RPM.
General configuration advice: configure with --pdump, and avoid Motif.
To give more specific advice and/or locate a bug in our code, we need
(1) a C backtrace (2) the Installation file from the new build, _not_
the Installation file from whatever XEmacs you're currently using.
It's in the top-level directory of the build hierarchy, named (as
you've probably guessed) "Installation".

I suppose we could put
*** XEmacs build fails inexplicably.
Inexplicable failures are commonly due to backwards-incompatible
changes in the OS. Try `./configure --pdump ...'.
in PROBLEMS. --pdump is intended to address the most important reason
for OS changes affecting XEmacs (the extremely implementation-dependent
"unexec" process).
