Depends on the MTA. I know mine does, or I'd be in deep aggravation. ;)
The rule at most MTAs seems to be:
"Either the recipient needs to be local, or the submitter needs to be local.
Local may be defined as 'same domain', or perhaps an IP address check, or
SMTP AUTH, or similar".
