This sounds like you haven't restarted XEmacs, and you already have
AUCTeX loaded in that XEmacs. Emacs Lisp does not provide a reliable
way to unload a package, and there's no good way to tell it to reload
all of the libraries in a package. The only way to ensure that
upgrades to Lisp files on disk take effect is to restart XEmacs.
If you've got a ton of work-in-progress in that XEmacs, you could try
reloading all the libraries in AUCTeX, but that provides no guarantees
of consistent behavior.
