I suspect you are correct. Um, for 21.1 you are permitted to put
mojibake into the buffer, but you are not permitted to crash. We need
either a fix or to disable it as a default. 21.2 is allowed to crash
until we get a real fix.
My sun at work is currently switched off (it's too loud and it has no use --
besides compiling and testing XEmacs :-) ), so I can't test dtterm/dtpad from
here. Tomorrow I'll try if I can enter somehow japanese characters, but I
don't know how to do it with a german sun keyboard. Perhaps you can give me a
hint how one types in japanese in dt* apps with latin keyboards?
I think I remember a login option with my CDE where I could choose the
language, and if I remember right, there was also japanese in it.

I have no idea. If you need it, I suspect I can get you login access
if I ask nicely enough.
I'll email you tomorrow morning (about 9:00 AM MET -- if I can manage to get
up that early -- today is a holiday :) ) if I can get some kana into my
dtterm. this is in 10 hours from now.
Regards,
Oliver.
