featurep 'file-coding returns nil

If XEmacs is configured either --with-mule (a lot of extra baggage you may not want) or --with-file-coding (the light weight option), it will check for the MSDOS CRLF convention and automatically convert to the internal convention (same as Unix, LF = newline). We can't do anything about the Mandrake configuration; if they don't enable the feature, there's nothing we can do for you.
