This is hard to fix in our code I think; the crash is buried in Xlib,
so we have to find a font that exists on every platform.
Try using the resources
*menubar*FontSet: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
*popup*FontSet: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
and work forward from there to a menubar/popup font you can stand.
If you still crash, the server is pretty well terminally broken;
you'll have to find out what it wants and stick it in there by hand.
Please let us know what font you do have. Helvetica is kind of
universal, except apparently on Windows.
