WAV support under linux - odd file (was Re: Patches & MIME)

Was anybody able to play this wav file through XEmacs? I get the error:
audio: Unsupported file format (neither RAW, nor Sun/DECAudio, nor WAVE
but according to 'file', it is:
/tmp/19980604-1-gsm-8k.wav: Microsoft RIFF, WAVE audio data, mono 8000 Hz
This is under linux w/b42
