XEmacs 21.4.20 No text on buttons, no root to hierachy, no help, no nothing...

Hi, I'm not having any luck building XEmacs 21.4.20 (and getting it to actually work) on Slackware with 2.6.17.13 kernel, gtk+1.2.10, gtk+2.8.20 and gcc 3.4.6. I've lost track of the different ways I've tried to configure it. The problems are the same no matter whether I use a vanilla configure, or try --with-gtk in combination with or without gtk specified for scrollbar, menubars, etc. I did a bunch of searches and tried the few variations on configure options I could find but the result was always the same. When I start XEmacs from a terminal I get a slew of messages saying that there isn't an obvious root for the XEmacs hierarchy. The xemacs executable is in /usr/local/bin and it is a symlink to the versioned-executable. (There is also a *.dmp in /usr/local/bin which is quite hideous- is something broken or is that intentional?) The libraries went into /usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.4.20/ The next problem is that all the button across the top are just grey squares with no text. Many of the pulldown menus also don't work, everything's greyed or gives error messages, even Help -> about. I didn't find anything relevant in the PROBLEMS file nor on the XEmacs website. Where, oh where did I go wrong?
