In Stephen Eglen's collection I found tex-wcount, which counts

of latex file, using the detex program, and displaying the result in
the modeline. It uses the timer library and count every N
second. However it seems only to work under GNU emacs since it uses
timerp which is not defined in xemacs.
But timerp is defined in XEmacs, in the fsf-compat package. If you
change the (require 'itimer) to (require 'timer), does tex-wcount work?
(I don't have a detex handy to try it, or I would.)
