It could be Emacs-compatibility, too. That and backwards
compatibility account for most of the curios in our APIs.
Ben and I were thinking about rehashing it to work with a leading
string (probably just "") if that's something you guys would be
interested in looking at.
IIUC that you would simplify the code to assume that every menu has a
name, I think it's a good idea, technically, but a suboptimal use of
your time, project-integration-wise.
Before we could integrate it we'd need to check our packages, most
recent versions of certain important packages that mess with the
menubar (Gnus and VM come to mind, maybe AUCTeX, JDEE, CEDET, ...),
Emacs and SXEmacs compatibility, etc. But AFAIK the menu API isn't
broke, just ugly. I don't think we'd bother. Soooo ... *you* would
need to do that checking and possibly updating too.
OTOH, there's *so* much low-hanging fruit in simply reorganizing the
menus and making obscure but powerful functionality accessible (that's
why Lucid called their product "Energize", after all!), let alone
fixing Xft and/or GTK+, etc.
