I hope, I haven't screwed up things too much (besides the double
increment of the VERSION number). Give them a whirl and let me know
if you encountered any problems.
Here's something I noticed (just upgraded my packages via PUI, which
went fine otherwise):
The package-index* files now contain only the updated packages, whereas
they used to (and should still) contain all the packages. Simply
merging from the stable package-index* the ones that aren't in
pre-release should be the way to go AFAIK.
This manifests itself with only the pre-release ones being listed in PUI
if one updates the listings from the pre-release area.
