Is copyright a useful term with respect to computer programs?
I say: no.
So says the FSF, basically. The law, however, says differently. The
GPL has been crafted exactly in order to have a corpus of software that
effectively is free from the restrictions that come automatically with
creation of a copyrightable work. Since copyright can't be abolished,
the GPL is intended to abolish most of its adverse affects and, in
contrast to releasing into the public domain, give the software a teflon
coating that lets nobody else reattach them.
