OK, so we know that the problem isn't Gnus. Personally, I suspect a
dodgy libpng. What happens when you visit a PNG file (C-x C-f
/path/to/foo.png RET)? Does XEmacs crash or are you able to view the
image?
Maybe all you need to do is update your libpng and rebuild XEmacs,
linking against the new library.

You obviously have reasons for not building your own XEmacs from
source, but that may well be the quickest solution to your problem.
