This usually means that your TERM environment variable is set to
something really primitive, such as "dumb". Try evaluating this in
*scratch*:
(getenv "TERM")
Also, try running "xemacs -nw" in a terminal window somewhere and
repeat the experiment.
This isn't relevant. The problem is the capability of M-x shell
(low), not that of the system's TTY. From a shell buffer:
steve@uwakimon ~/edu $ echo $TERM
emacs
steve@uwakimon ~/edu $
I would suggest trying eterm or so instead.
