Opening /very/ big files

Hi there, somebody recently asked me if it was possible to have XEmacs only load parts of files in buffers instead of loading the whole files. They have files that can grow up to 1Go or more, which fills up their memory. I don't think that's possible, but the idea (I guess) would be to have some sort of a window on the file that moves around as the user navigates in the file.
